one thing that pleased me so much about the “to all the boys ive loved before” movie was that it portrayed high school so realistically. like, the casual mentions of/the usage of social media (like peter mentioning watching chris’ snapchat story, or the etiquitte of commenting on someone’s IG photo of you) was just so accurate. they didnt go completey over the top when it came to social groups and popularity. like, you can tell peter and gen are popular, but the crowd in the hallway doesnt part when they walk through. theyre treated like normal (albeit cooler) people among their peers, not royalty. it doesnt try to pull that “text sent around the school and everyone receives it at the same time and laughs at the victim” gag that SOME high school dramas like to pull despite it NEVER happening in real life (cough 13 reasons why cough). the scene with the photo on the locker required some suspension of belief, but it was done in a way that literally could have been done to someone before, and i can forgive it. even in the party scene, it was just most people standing around and talking. no one was puking in a vase, or doing kegstands, or dancing on a table, and ive been to many a highschool house party that was literaly just. people standing around, drinking and talking. this movie felt like actual teenagers were consulted in the making, not some middle aged writers who forget high school and get movie tropes confused with memory. in this essay i will
My favorite things about all the boys i’ve loved before
Spoilers:
-The representation!! I think it’s really important for young asian women to be able to see themselves in movies!! While i know not everyone can relate it’s refreshing seeing an asian female as a protagonist!!.
-Speaking of representation we have a beautiful gay black guy lucas who doesn’t freak out about lara’s letter and actually become close friends!! He gives her beautiful advices.
-the cinematography!! It was just beautiful especially the parts where they showed they were going to the ski place and at the openning of the movie with the fantasy of lara jean
-How peter and lara jean connected about talking about how each prespectively miss their parents.
-Lara jean’s dad who isn’t acting like the stereotypical “ i have to protect and lock inside my daughter” but instead loves to see her happy and understand she is her own person!! Also he just tries to do his best ok
- the sisters bond its just so pure and beautiful.
i love that even though he was introduced and then killed off within 10 episodes, Lil Sebastian left a bigger impact on the entire show than Mark Brendanawicz did after 2 fuckin seasons
